Self-Portrait

So Friday was a day off, and I decided to get some work done on Bernie's scarf. I did about 22 rows and was so frustrated at how hard it was that I put it aside for the night. I couldn't figure it out- I've done cables before, I've used Canadiana before, on a 4.5mm...never before did I almost puncture a finger-tip trying to cable without a cable needle (I never use one). It took me until Saturday morning to figure out that I'd grabbed a 3.5mm instead of a 4.5mm. Had to rip and start over.

I'm all caught up at least, and here's the wip so far.

Sam was my ever-present faithful companion as I knitted, and guarded my yarn with great alertness

Family Picture Day

This is my sister Laura (a.k.a. Ducky) and my auntie Fran.

It's really, really scary to me that my sister isn't even 18 yet, and that she looks like that.

This is Mark and Jon, Fran's sons. Last Friday Mark graduated from Carleton University with honors in Science, a major in Forensic Science and a minor in Psychology. Phew! Way to go Mark!

(What you can't tell about the poor guy in this image is that the poor thing had a severe case of Mono and was/is sick as a dog. What a trooper! Then again, with that course load, I'd want to be there for my grad too.)

This is my brother Mike, in a pose I like to think best captioned by Joey from Friends:

"How you doin'?"

Last but not least, my brother Aaron. Ok my mom didn't send me this pic today, but I felt bad showing off everyone else and not him, so here he is.

p.s. I just noticed the subtle Blogger changes in uploading pics. Nice job Blogger! Now if only the pics would insert where the cursor is instead of up at the top every time...

Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad
Today celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary:

Betti and Mitchell

Congratulations!

I love you.

Stopping and Starting All Over Again
Am I getting anything accomplished?

I went to Loblaws yesterday to pick up my film and saw they'd developed all 12 rolls in matt, when I'd asked the guy for glossy. So now I'm leaving it there to be redone and I'll get it on Saturday. This does benefit me, though, 'cus I forgot I have 3 "develop 10 rolls get the 11th free" cards from them, already all full to the free roll.

I was working on the Glam Coat when a few problems crept up. First I discovered that all the decreases go against my natural way of doing them. Instead of slanting with the decrease line they all go against. Having been assured this was deliberate I kept on...only to discover that I was now getting 14sts to 4", not 15. The left front (which looked way to small to me, but then, I've never knit a medium before) should have been 9.5" wide and was about 10.5". I was about to start over with a smaller size needle when I decided to double check which size to make, so I'm waiting for an email to confirm before I start over again.

I decided to get some progress done, so I used some cotton and did the provisional cast on for Bernie's scarf, then picked up the 46 sts req'd for the body. That was when House finished and I ran to the computer to do a few puzzles.

You see, I'm ADDICTED to puzzles! And my brother Aaron (the one who was on TV in Australia) sent me a link to The Crimson Room. I'd done that one and found out (by searching for a cheat) that there were 2 others, so for those of you who like puzzles, here they are!

Basically, you wake up in a room and have to click around and find items to try to escape the room. They are harder than they look!
Don't do these at work unless you have at least 15 minutes free with no one coming to look at your computer. You might need more time. I'm not sure if there's sound, as my speakers aren't working. :)

The first one is the Crimson Room http://flash.qbol.net/pl;p/youxi/images/04042203.swf
Don't forget to look at your items from time to time. Also, the URL given in the game doesn't work, so the code to the safe is 1994. That's all the help you'll get from me! (Ok, I did need help, so I went online. If you're REALLY stuck, there's a walkthrough here: http://www-jcsu.jesus.cam.ac.uk/~rah56/walkthrough.html

Once you've beat the Crimson Room, the next room is the Viridian Room http://www.fasco-csc.com/works/viridian/index_e.php
Again, don't forget to look at your items. Sometimes you can't get another item until you look at something you already have. Note: the first part of this game is getting all the items- some are REALLY hard. Then you need to combine items together...you'll see. (I needed help again, I think I like solving the puzzles more, even if I use a cheat. There's a walkthrough with pictures here: http://nordinho.com/vbull/showthread.php?t=3391)

Last but not least is the sequel to Viridian room: The Blue Chamber http://www.fasco-csc.com/works/bluechamber/index_e.php
This one is easier, and shorter than the rest. If you need it, a walkthrough is here http://nordinho.com/vbull/showthread.php?t=3785&page=1&pp=10

Good luck!

Progress...
...gave in all 11 rolls of film, should have them ready by Tues or so

...picked up the Patons Shetland Chunky and Allure to make Yafit's wedding gift (Glam Coat), and the Canadiana for Bernie's (Intertwined Cables Scarf) and 5 more skeins of Noro Kureyon to make myself a Truly Tasha's shawl (heavy, I'm sure) for fall/winter...once everything else is out of the way

...picked up my library book The Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons Hiatt that they got for me on inter-library loan

...went to Bouclair, Dormez-Vous, Winners and Wal-Mart to get supplies for my parents' anniversary gift (which will be late since it's the 22nd of June and today's the 20th

...swatched the Glam Coat and hit it on the nose, so cast on and started the left front

...ate supper and am now about to crash into bed to knit the night away. I don't know if my body got used to the pumped-in oxygen in Vegas or what, but ever since I've been home all I want to do is sleep! I can barely open my eyes in the morning and I'm yawning by 9pm.

Once I get my pics I'll scan a couple and post them here, even maybe one of me for Robbie in BC. :]

Finally home!
It was starting to look like we'd never make it back from Vegas! We were supposed to have an 11:30pm flight from Vegas to Toronto, landing at 6:55. Catch an 8:00 flight from TO to Montreal and be on home soil at 9:15am Wednesday. Instead we arrive at the airport for 10:30 Tuesday night to find out the flight was cancelled because the crew's working time had expired, and that we were going to put up in the local Hampton Inn for the night. Caught a 12:18pm flight to TO Wed afternoon, landed in TO at 7:30pm and waaaaiiiited until 11:45pm to get our flight to Montreal. Landed at 1:00am. On the way to Vegas they lost my aunt's bags, she got them only Saturday morning (we arrived in Vegas 10:30pm Thursday night). On the way home from TO they lost mine and my cousin's. As of this writing they still have not arrived at my house, although they are supposed to be en-route.

Only knit on the plane there, and while waiting to board on the way back.

Too much to recount right now, but I will post some pics:

This pic is part of an ecard I got from my secret pal (from the Secret Pal 5 exchange).

This is some pretty blown glass at our hotel (The Mirage)

This is a view from one of the trams we took from hotel to hotel. I feel silly that I can't identify it after walking past all the hotels 78 million times. I think it's a sign for the Bellagio.

I love this picture. It's at the Luxor (the Egyptian-themed hotel) and I took it right before we boarded the tram to the Excalibur (the medieval-themed hotel). These were the only pics I took with my Palm, everything else was on regular film I still have to develop.

Last but not least, this pic is of the rest of my prize for winning Michelle's caption contest. It's 6 skeins with 3 different colors of cotton, some adorable knitting cards that I absolutely love 'cus I've never seen any around here, and a card from her with a ladybug on the cover, which I'm not sure if she knows is my little symbol. Thanks so much Michelle! Oh, and the teas from Adagio arrived right as I was leaving for the airport on Thursday, so I've even got that already! Thank you!

That's it for the pics right now. I'm going to wait to see if they bring me my luggage at some point then go out for a bit. The yarn I ordered for Bernie and Yafit's wedding gifts has arrived, and my library got in a copy of The Principles of Knitting for me through an inter-library loan. I'll finally get to see this book that has knitters spending $100s of dollars on.

It's good to be home.

Leavin' on a Jet Plane...
I probably won't get a chance to post tomorrow before I head off, so I'm saying a big goodbye to anyone who reads this blog. I'll be back next Wednesday. Until then take care and keep knitting! Oh yeah, where am I going?

I just recieved my first gift-certificate for Adagio Teas! It's from Michelle as a prize for winning her caption blog contest. Yay! I showed it to Yannick when he got home and he made me spend it right away, so an herbal sampler package is on its way to us, all thanks to Michelle!

To the what- 9? people who read my blog, sorry about the lack of interesting content lately. I've been in a serious blog funk. It could be due to the heat wave going on here and the fact that my computer practically sits in the sun, which makes me tend to avoid it when I'm home.

I finished the Shapely Tank on Friday and weaved in all the ends. Just in time to wear on Saturday night. I was very pleasantly surprised with the drape of the fabric, because I'd assumed that the Sirocco would be stiff and yet the tank drapes and flows, doesn't cling and is really comfy.

We had a good time at the 40th anniversary party for Yannick's aunt and uncle, Lise and Leo. There was a sit-down dinner, drinks, d.j., airing of a video montage with photos and music, and even a special guest. I don't watch it (amazing- a tv show I don't watch!) but there's a Canadian American Idol-type show (not Canadian Idol) called Star Academie. Well, one of the contestants is a cousin to Yannick's cousin's wife, and he came and sang for about an hour. He sang in both French and English, and was very good. His name is Dave Roussy.

I did absolutely nothing yesterday, not even knit. I've made up for it today by working on the baby outfit. I'm trying to get some of it done because when I get back from Las Vegas the yarn for Yafit and Bernie's wedding gifts will have arrived, and their wedding date is before the baby shower.

I'm also starting something new. From now on when you comment on my blog I'll reply here but copy/paste it into an email directly to, since I realized that I enjoy when people email me once I've commented on their sites, so I should extend the same courtesies. I'll start tomorrow :)

To Shell: Gosh I'm not pregnant! Just moody lol. Hey, I know what the AKSP is but what's the back tack?

To Jen L: I wrote all about the knitting machine when I was using it in April. In case I forget to email you back you can check out the archives for April, it covers a few posts.

To kmckiernan: I'm so upset I forgot your first name! I hope to really enjoy SP5, are you in it?

To Caroline: It was great meeting you too! The Shapely tank is a great pattern, but I might make the straps narrower next time, that's the only thing I'd change.

Shapely Tank Almost Done
Sunday I braved my fears and headed off to the meetup at Gare Centrale. I was nervous 'cus I've never driven downtown before, but I cheated by parking at a metro and taking the metro down. It went fine, and I had a really good time meeting everyone I've chatted with in the montrealknits yahoo group.

Monday I spent vegging and knitting- the perfect things to be doing when a sudden rainstorm comes down faster and more sudden then I've ever seen. I had the windows open and the sound was so relaxing! (Until the 1-full-minute long clap of thunder). Then Yannick picked me up and we went for dinner with Jackie and Kevin, then back to their house 'cus *horrors* they'd never seen Shrek 2. So we brought it over.

Yesterday I worked and did more knitting when I got home. I finished the back of Shapely Tank and did a 3-needle BO to seam the shoulders together. Now I just need to seam the sides and pick up and work the garter rounds for the neck. I'm a little worried it will be too snug after all, and that I'll look like I'm wearing a big potato sack. Yannick says not to worry until I've actually finished it, so I'll try to hold judgements until then.

I also heard from my secret pal for the first time, so YAY! This is my first time doing a secret pal thing, so I'm really excited.
