I'm starting something new. To get out of having to come up with a clever title for each post, I'm turning to the dictionary for a random word. Maybe it'll fit in with the post. Maybe not. Maybe I'll come up with a clever way to make it fit. In any case, this starts NOW.
Ahh bounty. Bountiful, actually. How could I not feel bountiful? Besides all the wonderful stash I've already shared with you, today I get home from a trip to the LYS, and I have this:

The magazines are obviously to read. The yummy colorful stuff is a Fleece Artist kit of mohair and Blue-Face Leicester (I don't know what this means but it says it on the tag) to make myself a pair of mittens. I fell in love with the colors and fondled it every time I went to the LYS. I guess my willpower today was at a low, 'cus somehow it ended up in my hands at the cash AFTER I'd already bought and paid for my other stuff. I'd like to think I'll have them done while its still cold out, but who am I kidding? I live in Canada. It's cold until June. The Snowflake and Silky stuff are to make a teddy bear to be gifted (by someone else, not me. I'm just doing the knitting). I imagine it will be very cute once done, especially since I found a little shop that sells teddy eyes and snouts. I can't wait to see the finished project, but I won't be casting this on until at least January. Too much holiday stuff to do first. For those who are amazed that this post's word fits perfectly with the post, well, ok, I cheated. I picked this first word. Whatever, my blog, my rules. All future ones will be random, I promise. And for anyone who has issues with knitters or knitting in general, read the cover of knit.1 up there. Knitting is Sexy. Told you so. |

Earlier in the week I asked Yannick if I could teach him how to knit. There are many, many men who knit out there, and many of them are straight, I assured him. He said sure. This was our conversation last night:
Me: So, you're still gonna let me teach you to knit?
Yannick: Sure.
Me: What's the first thing you're going to make once you learn?
Sweetheart: Something for you, probably.
Me: How come?
Angel: Because you're always making stuff for everyone else, and you haven't even knit something for you yet.

Check out this email from my Bubbie :
"I went to Centaur Theatre with 8 other women who fell in love with my scarf and were busy examining it. And then afterthe play I went to the washroom and put on my coat and the scarf. I looked in the mirror and was satisfiedthat I had it on just the way I wanted it. No sooner do I walk out of the washroom does a lady come over and start examining the scarf and would you believe she asks me to take it off so she can see it better! What a hit it made!"
Yay! I'm so happy they liked it, but even more that you like it!

| i did it again |
I SWEAR I thought I posted yesterday. I know I planned on it. I think I was going to do it after lunch with Yannick and Debbie...but then we got sidetracked by all heading over here to watch movies all day. NOTE: If you are over 15, do not get sucked in to the mess that is Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. You can thank me later. In any case, my original plan for yesterday was to come home after lunch, blog a bit, and then finally finish updating my finished object gallery. I had even told Yannick and Debbie that this was my plan for the day, to which Yannick asked "why can't you do it tomorrow?"
Ahem.
How does one tell one's boyfriend, the same boyfriend that one normally complains doesn't spend enough time with one, that she would rather work on the computer the one day that week they have time to spend together, so that on Monday, one's day off from work, one can have the entire glorious day to watch the shows I taped during the week and knit with no responsibilities like cleaning one's house or doing one's laundry? Turns out I couldn't say it, which is why we all ended up downstairs, and I graciously sacrificed my couch for Debbie (well, she'd already taken Yannick's couch, so I sacrificed mine for him so he'd have somewhere to glare at her menacingly from), and sat on the floor. It's not so much fun to knit on the floor. It's worse to try and knit while lying on your back 'cus you're hurting from sitting on the floor.
Note to the waiter at Bocaccino's: if I could get them to stop hitting each other, don't you think I would have? Let's just say that Yannick is 6'2", and Debbie is 4'11", and every time I bring the two of them together, they try to beat each other up. I know I should just stand back and watch, it's quite comical really. (For anyone who is worried about the eventual outcome, please note that Debbie, while short, is actually a trainer at the gym and teaches like 300 classes a week and packs a mean punch. Yannick is...uh...tall. Ok, he's really strong too, but I won't go on and on about his physical prowress. Just let it be known that in a knock-down, all-out battle of the best between he and Debbie, well, I wouldn't cast my vote until the last round.)
Moving on, I do have progress from yesterday.
This wonderful tube-like object is my foray into the world of thrums. It's most of mitten # 1, to be gifted to my dad for Hanukah. I'm quite happy with it, but for 3 reasons. Dissatisfaction Reason 1) I don't like the thrums sticking out the bottom of the mitt. The pattern calls for starting them on the 4th row, and I think it's too soon. Solution: I'll probably cut out the first row of thrums at the end, and omit them for the 2nd mitt. Issue: Probably resolved. Dissatisfaction Reason 2) I don't like how long the mitt is. Solution: I'll leave it the way it is unless I see I'm running out of yarn for the other mitt, in which case I'll steal some off the cuff and reknit it. Yannick tried it on and said that while it is long, long is a good thing 'cus some jackets ride up, and these are for my dad when he's jogging so the more warmth the better. Issue: Resolved (and how cool is it that I can have Yannick try these on as I go, so when I make his pair for Christmas I'll know they'll fit and he'll be none the wiser?) Dissatsifaction Reason 3) There is some kind of mistake in the pattern. Hold on, I'm not jumping to find mistakes everywhere. I'm just so analytical that they seem to stand out to me. Case in point: for the thumb, 13 sts were put onto a holder. It says to slip these back onto a needle, and then pick up 13 more sts from the other side of the thumb hole. This means I have 26 sts, right? Then the patt says, "knit across 13 sts, k2tog, knit across 13, k2tog. Repeat until 24 sts rem on the needles". Wha??????? I only start with 26 sts, by decreasing 2 sts I wind up at 24 sts right away, not to mention the fact that I can't knit across 13, k2tog, and still have 13 left to knit across! Looks like there's a trip to my LYS in the forecast for today. Luckily they have such a mitt on display, they'd better have an answer for me!

| Seeing a trend |
It has come to my attention that in order to be a knitter, a blogger, and/or both, I must own a cat. There are many sites that confirm this theory, see Yarn Harlot or Wendy Knits! on the sidebar for some proof. Luckily, as it happens, I do own a cat. Phew! For a minute there I thought I'd have to give up knitting, blogging, and/or both!
World, meet Sam:
NOTE: for those of you unfamiliar with cats, Sam is the white furry animal in the picture.
Sam is 4, thoroughly spoiled, and believes himself to be a dog. I haven't actually had a conversation with him in which he said "I think I'm a dog", nor has he signed up for any trans-gender support groups, but based on his actions lately, I'm infering. (How many cats do you know who play fetch? And for those of you raising your hands, running after a toy then losing interest and sniffing disdainfully isn't considered playing fetch. That's being a cat. Sam actually runs after the stick and brings it back, drops it at my feet and meows as if to say "more". That's playing fetch.)
Now, since this is a knitting blog, it is very lucky for me that Sam tends to turn up when I'm knitting. It is also lucky for me that I usually have my Palm on me at the time so I can take pictures that probably only I find entertaining.

I forgot again yesterday. See? This is why I'm doing a practice session at posting every day. I'm practicing for next year. I'm just not doing a very good job. This doesn't matter. It's just practice.

What I don't get with the whole -Along thing is how it works. Are there progress reports? Weekly meetings? Some big guy named Tiny who shows up at my door weekly demanding to see the "stuff" in exchange for not breaking the "kneecaps"? Hmm. {Note to self: next time investigate these knit-along things before joining!}
As an aside, I showed this cuff to my friend Julie when she came over for our weekly card game last night. Before permitting herself to touch it (probably afraid at the creepy way I kept saying "touch it, it's so soft, touch it, touch it!") I had to promise her that it wasn't human hair. Don't worry Julie, it really wasn't. I promise, it wasn't human hair. [insert maniacal wicked laughter here]

| Le Cochon Est Finis! |
(translation: the pig is done!)
 
I redid the eyes 'cus both Yannick and Annette (the CLSC nurse who comes by once a week to check how I'm changing Y's bandages) thought the original had psychotic eyes. Apparently an "evil" stuffed toy is not thought of to be the best choice of gift for a 14 year old. Apparently this will cause severe traumas including sleeplessness, delusions and a paranoia of all things porcine. Who knew?
As a last minute addition I was asked to incorporate the recipient's name. I made up a knitted scarf and spent this evening trying to duplicate stitch her name. Apparently I don't do duplicate stitch. I do, however, cross stitch. Voila:
I had to make the scarf tube-like so I could hide the back of the lettering, so this is what I did:
CO 80 sts
Row 1- k
Row 2- k
Row 3- k3, p to last 3 sts, k3
Row 4- k
Repeat rows 3 & 4 twice more
Row 9- k3, p to last 3 sts, k3
Row 10- k3, p to last 3 sts, k3
Row 11- k
Row 12- k
Rows 13-18- repeat rows 3 & 4 three times more
Row 19- k
Rows 9 through 12 gave me a garter border that matched the border of the first 2 rows, then a purl row to fold over, then repeated for the back. Once I finished the lettering I just stitched up the live sts to the CO row and added a fringe.

This blog gets the honor of being the first one reviewed 'cus
a) it's the first blog I finished reading from conception to today, and
b) it's the first blog I ever read, the blog that led me to realize there was actually a like-minded community of other knitters out there, even Canadian ones!
So thank you, Stephannie, for letting me know I wasn't alone.
I found her blog by accident. I had done an internet search on "Charlotte's Web shawls" because I'd seen a lot of emails in one of my knitting egroups about them and wanted to know what the fuss was about. I wound up at someone's blog (I think Wendy?) and learned about these gorgeous shawls, and saw a link to see what the uber-creative Stephannie had done...she'd turned a Charlotte's Web shawl into Charlotte the Poncho. It's stunning! I salivated. I drooled. I stayed and read through her entire blog, archives and all. And don't just think she's any old knitter, oh no! She's a DR too! And I'm amazed at how fast she knits! There might be others out there as speedy or faster, but with her as my original measuring stick, I, sadly, don't quite make it up to par on the speedy front. Aha! A goal!

| Better late than never... |
Ok, seems I forgot to mention commitment #2 from the other day. So here it is:
2) I will go through each blog I read and actually read it. Not just skim. I will go through the archives and catch up and really get to know the kindred souls who put their hearts into every post. Luckily, I have a nifty little program called Plucker on my Palm that lets me take web pages and view them offline...so I can browse the blogs at my leisure.

| I'm not that late! |
Ok, so I'm 37 minutes late for my 1-post-per-day trial system. But it's Yannick's fault, I swear! We went out for dinner, and then watched CSI:NY and then he went on and on about possessed stuffed animals...it was all I could do to break away and come send this message. Besides, I could have changed the message time and lied, and then no one would ever know. But I didn't. I'm honest. Honest!
But I'm not coming empty handed...I've got THIS:
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is Piggy Progress! Tomorrow I work on the cute little scarf to keep this piggy's bacon warm, and its all ready to be gifted! Woo hoo!

| Making commitments |
or maybe needing to be committed? Or how about making mittens? I have two pairs of those to do... (ok, I'll stop now)
I don't have any knitting updates as I've been crocheting like mad on Piggy so I can get back to my knitting. So what can I talk about in a knitting blog if I don't have knitting progress? Oh come on, I'm sure I can make something up!
I hereby make 2 commitments to my knitting blog-world.
1) I will post every day. Since my lovely non-knitting, non-blogging friend Jackie commented that I don't update my blog enough, I've decided that I would like to New Year's Resolute myself to blog on a daily basis. Of course, those who know me know that I prefer to try something before jumping right in (there are still those who speak of the time I asked for a sample of each of the 6 salad dressings offered at Baton Rouge so I wouldn't order one by name and then hate the taste. Obnoxious? Maybe. Time-Consuming? Sure. Foolish? Absolutely not! I saved my salad from being drenched in the yummy-sounding but horrid tasting "balsamic-lime vinaigrette" and proved that I actually do like blue cheese, all in one fell swoop) so to further amuse those people I am attempting this commitment before I commit to it. Ahem. This means I am PRACTICING writing in this blog every day until Jan 1, so I'll know at that time if it's a doable thing to commit to. Make sense? Good. Moving on.

| Feeling Ashamed... |
The other night Yannick and I were doing a crossword puzzle together. The clue was "wool", and the word was 8 letters, starting with a "c". After 1/2 an hour Yannick finally came up with "cashmere". The word never once occurred to me, the knitter/crocheter/crafter/artsy-fartsy person. I'm not fit to hold needles. :(

1 body, head, ears and snout done, 4 legs and 1 tail to go! (Although I might re-do the snout. I made the head/body larger than the actual pattern, but forgot and did the snout the original size. I think it'll be cuter oversize so I'll make it up and see at the end.)

| Afterthought |
Currently on the needles:
1) Justin's Hooded Sweater- stalled waiting for Monday so I can work out the button band at my LYS.
2) Entrelac Throw- stalled 'cus it's my "when there's nothing better to knit" project
3) Booga bag- stalled until Monday so I can pick up an addi turbo to knit it on, 'cus the kureyon is sticking too much to my Denise interchangable needles.
4) Yannick's Fair Isle Sock- stalled 'cus it's my "take along" project so it languishes in my purse until I'm stuck somewhere without any other knitting.
5) Birthday Suit swatch- stalled
Everything is temporarily stalled because I have a special gift to make. I've made the crocheted children for work, and a family member has asked me to make a custom piggy for his grand daughter. So I'm putting that first for now, and I really want to do a good job. I'm still bringing some knitting to work for when I get a break, but I won't bring the pig 'cus my dad smokes at work and I don't want the pig to smell roasted.

| I must be insane |
I just started knitting my first-ever booga bag, and it's also the first time I'm using Noro Kureyon. I'm using color
124 which is an incredibly yummy mix of shades ranging from plum through berries of all kinds, all the way to cherries and back. The yarn doesn't actually smell...and if I hold it to my nose it just kinda smells like hands. But I SWEAR that as I'm knitting I can't stop smelling the scent of raspberries. When I stop to smell the yarn it obviously isn't fruit-scented, but then the minute I start knitting again I guess the visual of the color overpowers my senses and I start imagining I smell fresh raspberries.
I'm getting hungry.

| Stash Happy Me Make |
I can't post any pics of latest progress, because this really hasn't been much of a knitting week. I did get the ribbing done on Justin's hood, but only managed to get through picking up 50 of the 90 sts for the button band when felled by yet ANOTHER migraine. I swear it's been like 2 a week for a month now. So instead I amused myself by taking pictures of my stash.
These 2 FULL skeins are left-over from my To Dye For Sweater. I don't know what I'll make from them, although Yannick thinks the softness is incredible, so maybe I'll make him a pair of socks. "Mohair" socks anyone?
I bought this cotton dk stuff over the summer to make the Shapely Tank/Tee available for free at White Lies Designs. I don't know if I'll like the slubbiness of the yarn, hence the hesitation to begin.
This is the 1/2 skein or so of mohair left over from my grandmother's scarf. I don't know what I'll do with it yet, maybe cuffs on a pair of koigu gloves?
This abundance of yarn is the 22 skeins of Sisu Yannick bought me to make my birthday suit. The lonely little ball of Eros Herwool on top is to make a scarf to go with it to add a bit of color to the all-black suit.
The pink Patons Canadiana I bought yesterday 'cus I might be hired to make a stuffed pig. I'll know today if I get the go-ahead, and I'll be ready to start tonight.
All I need to make the Velvet Oblivion eye mask from Knitty (pattern here). Maybe with all these migraines I should get a move-on on this!
More wonderful Regia self-patterning sock yarn, this time in blues to make myself a striped pair.
A bunch of Patons Aran Fisherman Style to make my DKNY Landscape Cardigan.
3 extremely yummy skeins of Noro Kuryeon to make myself a booga bag.
1 skein of Koigu that I'll admit I didn't think through before purchasing. I wanted to order some to see what all the fuss was about. I now know what the fuss was about...except that I don't have enough to fully enjoy it! I don't even have enough for a pair of socks or gloves. I might just need to order more. :)
The 3 skeins of Sirdar Snuggly DK are to make the pink baby onesie and booties for the girl twin of Yannick's cousin. The creamy yellow and soft pink Sirdar Snuggly 4ply are to make the sundress and hat for the other baby girl from his other cousin.
The 2 brown skeins of Bernat Soft Boucle were gifted by my cousin Robyn. I already had the cream skein, so I'm using the 2 together to make the messy blob in the middle- my entrelac throw.
Last but not least Robyn also gifted me these 3 skeins of Red Heart Light & Lofty, which I'd like to find a v-neck pullover pattern and make a top for myself, 'cus I like blue shirts against my blue eyes. I heard it pills though, so we'll see.

| I almost forgot... |
I gave my first secret project to the recipient, so I can talk about it now. It was a scarf for my grandmother 'cus she bought me the great "Knitting-Pattern-A-Day" 2005 calendar for my bday. One day she came into the store and told me about a yarn she saw someone knitting with and that it was really pretty. By the description I knew right away it was the railroad yarn, so I picked up some Eros Herwool and mixed it with a black mohair to make a really elegant scarf. Happy birthday Bubbie!

| Doing the happy dance! |
I'm almost finished Justin's sweater!
This pic was taken yesterday, so it doesn't show the beautiful seaming (grafting?) I did to join the hood. Instead of casting off the two sides I put them onto holders, so my seam is much thinner and neat. I rock! This morning I picked up the sts for the ribbing around the hood, and once that's done there are just the button bands and side/underarm seams! Woo hoo! Now I can start a new project...

I have never used as much math in my life as I have since I started knitting. And so far I've been fine with it, really. Until today.
I paraphrase from my pattern for the birthday suit:
(p.s. you have 308 sts on the ndls, and 10 markers placed around the body)
"dec 1 st on ea side of ea marker (20 decs)"
-ok, so I take 20 sts away from 308 sts and end up with 288 sts. So far so good.
"work even for 6 rows"
-duh. Still working with 288 sts. This is easy.
"repeat dec row"
-no sweat. I take 20 sts away from 288 to get 268. This is a breeze!
"work even until blah blah inches"
-could do in my sleep. Still 268 sts around. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
"inc 1 st on ea side of ea marker (20 incs)"
-ok, so I add 20 sts to my 268 to get 288. I see where this is going...
"repeat inc row every 6 rows..."
-so far so good. I work 5 rows plain, and work the inc row on the 6th row, right? Ok, moving on.
"...twice more..."
-uh huh, so now after adding the original 20 sts I'm adding another 20 and 20 (2 more inc rows) and 12 more rows of knitting...which brings me to 328 sts.
BUT
"...ending with 308 sts".
-HUH? How can I start with 308 sts, take away 20+20 to get 268, and then add 20+20+20 and wind up back at 308?
Hence the confusion. If anyone reading this has any clue where on the web to find errata for SandnesGarn pamphlets, in this case specifically issue 0309 pattern 12 page 10, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

So every time I look through a knitting book or magazine and see a cowl/headwarmer thingy, I think "I'd never make one of those. Who wears those?"
Well, today I decided I'm making one of those. Montreal winters are COLD and it's just starting. After wrapping my scarf around my ears each time my dad sent me for cigarettes, lotto tickets or to the post office, I finally decided to give in to the big furry warmness (did I make that word up?) and look for a pattern asap. I think I'll use my leftover skein of Bernat Soft Boucle in black so it will blend in with my winter coat.

| Catching Up |
Here's the latest:
For Justin's sweater- I've sewn the raglan seams and picked up for the hood. I need to complete the hood, pick up and work the button bands, then I'm done!
Over the weekend I couldn't work on the hoodie 'cus it was on the blocking board, so I decided to teach myself entrelac. My cousin Robyn had given me a large bag of craft stuff she didn't want any more (thanks Robyn!) and inside were 3 skeins of Bernat Light & Lofty in a blue, and 2 skeins of Bernat Soft Boucle in a brown blend. I happened to already have a Soft Boucle in a cream color, so using it with the browns I'm making an entrelac throw for our basement. I'm in no rush to finish it, but I got the technique from a Debbie Bliss book I took out from the library. Great info, great technique. Made it super easy!
I finally started carrying around a skein of the Sisu for my birthday suit so I can work on swatching that this week. I'm just waiting to finish typing up the pattern (I put all my patterns in my Palm so I don't need to carry big books around) and then I'm starting.
I'm also doing the same for my challenging project. I've decided the birthday suit is my "relaxing" project 'cus it's in a simple stockinette stitch. So I want something hard for when I want to use my brain. I found it in Vogue Knitting (also from the library). It's a sweater designed by DKNY and it uses cables and such to create a landscape with a fence, clouds, everything! I'm looking forwards to starting! I bought the yarn, now I need to see which size needles.
I also bought the yarn for a secret project that I can probably talk about here 'cus the person its for never uses the net. One time during a trip to our LYS, Yannick tried on a pair of mittens that he found SOO comfy. They are in st st, but use a technique called "thrumming" (I think). Basically every few rows you do a stitch with an extra piece of yarn and leave the ends loose inside the mitten to fuzz up, and it creates a super-warm, really cozy mitten. So I bought a kit in the most masculine color they had and I'll make him a pair for Christmas/Hanukah. I didn't add it to my WIP list yet 'cus I'm only going to start it next Monday. After my class I'll be staying at the Wool Shop to learn the technique.
Oh, and before I end this post, I DID get some work done on Yannick's remaining sock. It might be hard to believe, but my friend Jackie who reads this blog can attest that its true. On Saturday night we went bowling, and I let Yannick bowl for me so he could see if he was up to it since his back surgery. So, instead of sitting around doing nothing for the 2 games...I pulled out my knitting. It's small 'cus its on dpns, and I don't think I disturbed anyone. I have a feeling I was talked about the next day...and perhaps not very flattering by everyone...but I don't care. I still had a good time, still participated with everyone, and got about 15 rows done. I'm happy.

| Progress is slow, but it's there! |
I finished my secret project- for the most part. Just need to add some fringe, and its done. I've also finished the first sleeve of Justin's Hooded Sweater, leaving me only 1 more sleeve, the hood and the button bands to do. Gotta keep moving...

| This is NOT funny! |
My car was vandalized on "Mat Night", the night before Hallowe'en. Actually, the car was fine. But someone took it upon him or herself to screw with my little antenna smiley face head. So instead of my cute little cowgirl with the long blond braids peeking out from under her gray Stetson, I now have this:
She now looks like a Rabbi!!! She looks like she's been scalped! I called my mother for sympathy, and I got laughter and the advice to knit her a tuque. I'm not amused.
